About PHISO and its Activities

Peeky Hill Social Organization (PHISO) was founded in 1998 at the initiative of Kami Sherpa, who is also the founding President of Dhaleki Primary School, Vicky's Educational Foundation (VEDFON) and Catalonia School. During his presidential term from 1992 to September 1999, he participated in many activities with local people. He also sponsored the costs of two teachers in order to pass on the precious knowledge of the old lamas (monks) on the young boys and girls of the village of Goli VDC, in Solukhumbu district, in the lower Everest region.

The program proved very successful and consequently some young men became monks. Because monastic education is not enough in the modern world, Kami Sherpa decided to create the Peeky Hill Social Organization (PHISO) in order to raise funds and help the people of remote places like Goli to have access to education.

In this village, the primary school is located at a distance of more than 50 minutes walk while the high school is two hours away. Because parents in this area, as in others, don’t have time to bring their children to school due to their work, the long walk to the school through the forest prevents the young children to attend the classes.

Thus, aiming to help all those parents and their children, the organization has been planning to launch a primary school in the heart of this isolated and beautiful village.

In order to raise more funds, PHISO published in 2006 a Sherpa language dictionary Sherwi Tshik Dzo in which all words are given in three languages, namely: Sherpa, English and Nepali. It has been distributed in all parts of Nepal, as well as in Japan and the United States. This Sherpa language dictionary will be available on the Web in the near future. Any suggestion concerning the dictionary is welcome. Our aim is to bring out a complete Sherpa dictionary in the next year.

Also, in 2006, a CD with Sherpa songs untitled Dhakpi Sherwi Lu and a calendar were published.
